Dr. Pradipto Bandyopadhyay presents his credentials...
Mahanad plays an important role in the life of Dr. Pradipto Bandyopadhyay. It is a place, nay a personified entity still in the midst of sylvan environs with a captivating influence. Located at approximately 22.57’ North Latitude and 88’.19’ East Longitude, Mahanad is 6.4 kms south of Pandua in Hooghly district of WestBengal. Its historicity has been established by a number of scholars including Dr. Pravash Chandra Bandyopadhyay,Grandfather of Dr. Pradipto Bandyopadhyay. It is a unique place, the land of Nadaasadhana, of the Natha Yogis, the most important place for the Natha Sect in Bengal. It has got several features with a Navaratna Kali temple ,Brahmamoyee Kali Mandir, set up in 1236 B.S. and a number of Siva temples and also a mazar of Qaziman Fakir, a unique blend , a cultural synthesis in West Bengal.
Dr.Prabhas Chandra Bandyopadhyay wrote two pioneering volumes on the history of Mahanad in Bangla entitled ‘Mahanad Ba Banglar Gupta Itihas(Mahanad or Unwritten History of Bengal) in 1335 B.S.and 1338 B.S.respectively. He was the main spirit behind the Experimental Archaeological Excavation in Mahanad in1934-35 A.D. Thereafter a number of scholars have ventured into the subject. The archaeological exhibits have been preserved in the National Museum , New Delhi and various museums in WestBengal.
Dr.Pradipto Bandyopadhyay also wrote a book in English, ‘Natha Cult and Mahanad –AStidy in Syncretism’ (1992). He threw new light on the subject in a number of books in Bangla as well. Details and pictures along with a Map given in the concerned LINKS.
